Where to Stay in Pattaya – Best Areas and Hotels

The city is the center of the Pattaya-Chonburi metropolitan area, with a population of approximately 1,000,000 inhabitants.

Pattaya is famous around the world for being a “City of Sin”, the capital of sex and debauchery in Asia.

In recent years, the authorities have tried to shake off the sex-related fame that the Thai city has earned, making a great effort to promote family-friendly tourism.

In addition to its more popular attractions, Pattaya has beautiful beaches, a calm bay, ideal for water sports, and nightlife shows where cabaret and stunts are expected.

When choosing the best areas to stay in Pattaya, you should consider the reason for your trip. If you travel to Pattaya for nightlife, Pattaya Walking Street is the best option. If you are looking to relax in a familiy-oriented environment, the Dongtan Beach area, in the south of the city is a more elegant alternative, with a large number of luxury hotels.

Best areas to stay in Pattaya, Thailand

1. Reccommended area: Pattaya Walking Street

Walking Street is a entertainment district in Pattaya city.

Walking Street is located in the central part of the city.

The street is a tourist attraction for both foreigners and Thai citizens, mainly for its nightlife. The Walking Street area includes seafood restaurants, live music venues, beer bars, clubs, sports bars, go-go bars, clubs, and hotels, including a small gay area known locally as Boyz Town.

The area is closed to vehicles from 19:00 to 03:00. Although the closing hours of bars and clubs are officially at 04:00, some remain open, illegally, until later.

In addition to a large group of institutions offering sexual entertainment, a significant number of prostitutes, both women, and men, work on the street.

This area is not recommended for families, but it is the best area for nightlife in Pattaya.

It covers the entire area north of Pattaya Walking Street, where the road changes its name to become Beach Road.

It is one of the best areas to stay in Pattaya due to its central location and its less seedy, but equally vibrant character.

North Pattaya includes Hat Pattaya or Pattaya Beach, the most popular and central beach in the city. Although, it is not the best beach in Thailand, if you do not want to go by tuk-tuk or taxi to the furthest beaches (which are usually more beautiful and less crowded), this is still a good option.

In this area, you’ll find a large number of restaurants, as well as medium and high-end hotels and residential buildings.

North Pattaya also stands out for having superior quality accommodation, and for having many backpacker boutique options.

As expected, beachfront hotels tend to be more luxurious, with the economic options somewhat more hidden in the inner alleys.

North Pattaya is one of the best areas to stay in Pattaya if you are looking for comfort and tranquility, but still want to remain close to everything.

The Jomtien and Dongtan beaches are, generally, less crowded than Pattaya Beach, and are much more pleasant overall.

The Dongtan beach offers a curious mix of Russian tourists and the LGBT community, while the Jomtien beach is more family-oriented.

The waters of the south coast of Pattaya are usually calm, ideal for water sports.

Hotels in the area tend to range from luxurious to very luxurious, but cheaper alternatives can be found.

In general, this beach area is a good option for tourists who want to avoid, as much as possible, the excesses of the center.

Accommodation in Pattaya: Useful information

Although in recent years local authorities have made efforts to eradicate sex tourism from the main streets of the city, there is still a long way to go.

Sex tourism remains a sizable part of Thailand’s overall tourism industry, with tens of thousands of sex workers believed to operate in Pattaya alone, leading to it being named the sex capital of the world.

That said, it is possible to avoid the sordid world of mafia and prostitution in Pattaya and enjoy a family vacation in the city by dodging the areas surrounding Walking Street at nightfall.

If you want to overlook the city’s questionable nightlife (and call it “questionable” not because of prostitution itself, but because of the conditions in which it is practiced by most people who engage in this craft in Pattaya), there are many other attractions here.

If you are not willing to put aside nightlife on your visit to the city, we recommend some alternatives that do not encourage exploitation and human trafficking:

On the one hand, there are the cabarets of the city, in which the main characters are, usually, transvestites and transsexuals or, as they are locally known, ladyboys.

The KAAN shows (which is the local version of the Cirque du Soleil) offer acrobatic shows that are family-friendly.

If you want a western-style pub or disco experience, the best alternative is to go to the most prominent hotel venues. Some have sky bars and many others have their own nightclubs and live music venues.

During the day, beach options and related activities are the best way to enjoy Pattaya.

For the more sporty, the Phra Tamnak Hill offers several trails for hiking, jogging or walking. The reward is some of the best views in the city.

When it comes to accommodation, North Pattaya is a reccommended area to avoid sex tourism. The variety of hotels and cheap options make it an excellent neighborhood to stay in the Thai city. See accommodation in North Pattaya.
