Where to stay in Lyon – What you need to know

Very much in spite of the Lyonns, who feel a great rivalry against Parisians, most visitors often consider Lyon a human-scale version of Paris.

Where to stay in Lyon – Best areas and hotels

Lyon is unusual among European cities in that it combines the museums, galleries and cultural institutions worthy of a capital with the dynamism of an industrial center.

Lyon has many titles: French capital of gastronomy, capital of silk and former capital of the Gauls. And, although for the non-experienced traveller, Lyon may seem like a mini-Paris, the truth is that in many ways southern French city is the exact opposite of its great rival to the north.

As a tourist destination Lyon offers culture, gastronomy and shopping in a relaxed environment with smaller dimensions. Lyon is ideal for walking and getting lost in its history is not a pharaonic task.

Its location in the center-south of France and its proximity to the summits of the Alps means that the weather in Lyon is very varied throughout the year, with very cold winters and hot, humid summers.

The costs of accommodation in Lyon are high, although they do not reach Parisian levels of absurdity. A night at a 3-star hotel in the centre can cost around € 50 – € 60, while a bed in a hostel is around € 18. See accommodation in Central Lyon.

As for the best areas to stay, the most charming area is the medieval quarter of Vieux Lyon (See accommodation in Vieux Lyon). The most convenient area in terms of public transport and proximity to places of interest is La Presqu’Ile (See accommodation in La Presqu’Ile). If you are looking for cheap accommodation, then the 7th district is probably the best neighborhood to stay in Lyon (See accommodation in the 7th arrondissement).

This is a guide with the best areas to stay in Lyon.

Best areas to stay in Lyon

1. Best area: La Presqu’Ile

Without a doubt one of the best areas to stay in Lyon.

Presqu’Ile literally means “peninsula” and is located in the stretch of land formed by the confluence of the Rhone and Saone rivers. At its narrowest point, just before the two rivers meet, lies the 2nd arrondissement and the heart of Lyon. Here, the history of the buildings extends from the 12th century to modern additions.

This is the commercial district par excellence of Lyon, it houses beautiful 19th century buildings, as well as important monuments of the city.

The peninsula includes the districts 1, 2 and 4 of Lyon and is one of the best connected areas of the city, metro line A crosses the neighborhood from north to south.

La Presqu’Ile is one of the most attractive areas of the city, the buildings here are generally pretty, often painted in pale pastel colors with elegant ornate balconies. Most of them are shops and restaurants that make this area great for shopping and eating. During the day, the area between Place Bellacour and Place des Terraux is the main shopping centre of the city, with all the major French and international brands, as well as smaller shops by local designers.

The Rue de la Republique is the main shopping street in Lyon. Its layot is typical of the 19th century Haussman style: long straight boulevards full of shops and restaurants.
