Konak is Izmir’s historic heart and administrative center. It spreads along the coastline and is home to several landmarks and popular streets.

Konak’s appeal as one of the best areas to stay in Izmir resides in its proximity to significant cultural touchpoints, access to Izmir’s public transportation network, and a taste of the city’s local life.

The area’s most recognizable landmark is the Izmir Clock Tower. Erected in 1901 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Sultan Abdulhamid II’s accession to the throne, this monument is now the symbol of the city. The surrounding Konak Square has served as a central gathering point for centuries.

Where to Stay in Izmir: A Personal Take

On the ferry during my visit to Izmir
On the ferry during my visit to Izmir

My journey to Izmir was one I’ll never forget. The city’s vibrant culture and warm people made every moment special. During my stay, I chose the Mövenpick Hotel in Alsancak, which proved to be a comfortable choice. The service was good, the rooms were clean, and their breakfast had a variety of fresh options. The location was handy too, not far from key sites. But, the hotel could improve its Wi-Fi service, as it was a bit slow at times.

Staying in the city center (either Alsancank or Konak) is something I’d strongly suggest to anyone planning a visit. It puts you at the heart of everything, with easy access to local shops, restaurants, and historical spots. You get to experience the essence of Izher life.

My personal tip: try walking along the seaside promenade at sunset. The views over the Aegean Sea are breathtaking and it’s a perfect way to end your day.
