The beaches in Costa Teguise are windier compared to those in other parts of Lanzarote, making them particularly popular among surfers. Playa de las Cucharas (which translates to “Spoon Beach”) is a favorite spot for both surfers and sunbathers.

The heart of Costa Teguise is undoubtedly the Pueblo Marinero, a charming complex designed to resemble a traditional Canarian fishing village. Here, you’ll find a vibrant selection of restaurants, bars, and shops. Pueblo Marinero also hosts numerous street markets, concerts, and festivals, providing plenty of entertainment.

This area was developed under the vision of César Manrique, a renowned Lanzarote artist who was celebrated for his innovative fusion of architecture and nature. Arrecife is the capital of Lanzarote and it is close to the island’s airport. This area stands out because it offers a more authentic experience, with restaurants and bars loved by locals.

Why is this the best area to stay in Lanzarote:
  • César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport
  • Great restaurants and bars
  • Good area for shopping
  • San Ginés church and lagoon
  • Museums
  • Castle of San Gabriel
  • Good area for business travellers

Arrecife is the main entrance to Lanzarote. As the island’s capital and home to the airport, it is often the first place tourists encounter.

Located in a central position on the eastern coast, Arrecife lies almost halfway between the northern and southern tips of the island. However, this town is not generally the most popular place for tourists to stay in Lanzarote, primarily due to its less appealing beaches.

While there are beaches nearby, they are rocky and not ideal for swimming. Most visitors prefer Playa Blanca or Costa Teguise for swimming and water sports.

Despite this, Arrecife offers many attractions. The restaurants and bars are local favorites, providing a more authentic experience for those looking to escape the tourist crowds. The shops, including boutiques from local designers, are among the best on the island.

Accommodations in Arrecife vary widely. Notable options include the Arrecife Gran Hotel & Spa, the tallest building in Lanzarote, featuring a restaurant with stunning views.

Attractions worth visiting in Arrecife include the San Ginés Church and the adjacent lagoon, known as “charco,” filled with Atlantic seawater. Other notable sites are the San Gabriel Castle, the archaeological museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, located in another nearby castle.

Yaiza is close to Timanfaya National Park, featuring a remarkable landscape shaped by volcanic eruptions in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. During your visit to Timanfaya, which you can explore by bus, you might feel like you’ve landed on the moon or Mars while observing craters, caves, and volcanic rocks. Be sure to dine at El Diablo restaurant, where the heat from the earth is used to grill delicious dishes.

Located in the southwestern part of Lanzarote, Yaiza offers more than just Timanfaya. It’s also near El Golfo, home to the stunning Charco Verde, a green lagoon formed by seawater rising from the subsoil. El Golfo Beach, with its trekking trail and volcanic rocks, ranks among the most visited natural attractions on the island. While this beach is not ideal for swimming, it is perfect for photography or viewing from a distance.

Accommodations in Yaiza primarily consist of guesthouses, B&Bs, and tourist apartments, making it a more budget-friendly option for your stay in Lanzarote.

Although quieter than Puerto del Carmen or Playa Blanca, Yaiza still features several excellent bars and restaurants.

Why is this the best area to stay in Lanzarote:
  • Oldest part of Lanzarote
  • Villa Teguise Sunday market
  • Santa Bárbara Castle and Museum of Piracy
  • Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Although we’ve already mentioned Costa Teguise on this list, the original inland namesake village deserves an entry on its own.

Inland Villa de Teguise was the capital of Lanzarote until the 19th century and is even more central than Arrecife. As such, this area showcases a very authentic side of the island, with its traditional white houses and cobblestoned streets. Teguise was declared an architectural-historical-artistic town and is one of the oldest in Lanzarote.

The Santa Bárbara Castle is one of the main attractions of Teguise. This castle is located on the Guanapay Volcano, offering great views of Villa de Teguise and its surroundings. Inside, you’ll find the Museum of Piracy, which highlights the island’s notorious history. Other attractions in Teguise include a cacti garden and the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

When it comes to things to do in Villa de Teguise, the Sunday market is the best and most popular activity. The market runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is the place for souvenirs, arts and crafts, organic produce, and food.

Though it has fewer connections than Arrecife, Teguise is well-connected to other parts of Lanzarote by bus. Accommodation and dining options in this area are also more affordable.

Punta Mujeres is near Cueva de los Verdes and Jameos del Agua, two of Lanzarote’s main attractions. This is also a cheap area to stay in Lanzarote.

Why is this the best area to stay in Lanzarote:
  • Quiet beaches
  • Cueva de los Verdes
  • Jameos del Agua

Punta Mujeres, located on the northeastern coast of Lanzarote, captures the charm of a traditional fishing village. The name “Punta Mujeres” translates to “Women’s Point,” believed to have originated from the days when women would gather here to fish while the men were at sea.

This area is renowned for its scenic beaches and tranquil natural pools, offering a peaceful retreat from the busier tourist spots. However, Punta Mujeres has much more to offer beyond its stunning shoreline.

Close to Punta Mujeres are two of Lanzarote’s must-see attractions: Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes. Jameos del Agua, an impressive creation by artist César Manrique, features a cultural center, museum, and restaurant set within a fascinating volcanic tube. In contrast, Cueva de los Verdes is a captivating grotto that provides visitors with a unique experience of Lanzarote’s geological wonders, also under Manrique’s careful guidance.

Despite its proximity to these significant attractions, Punta Mujeres boasts more affordable dining and accommodation options than the more tourist-heavy areas, making it an appealing choice for visitors seeking adventure and value.

9. La Graciosa

A true hidden gem with virgin beaches

Although La Graciosa is a different island, it is very close to Lanzarote and has an even more peaceful vibe, with virgin beaches, mountains, and trails for cycling and trekking.

Why is this the best area to stay:
  • Beautiful natural attractions
  • Virgin beaches
  • Close to Lanzarote

Yes, we know that by all accounts and definitions, La Graciosa is a separate island. That said, it deserves a special mention on this list as a bonus track. After all, it’s just under a kilometer north of Lanzarote, with regular boat services running between the two islands every day.

Known as the eighth Canary Island, La Graciosa is the perfect place to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. With its golden sandy beaches, rugged mountains, and scenic trails for trekking and cycling, La Graciosa is a natural paradise that remains largely untouched by mass tourism. Among its hidden gems is the pristine Playa de las Conchas, located on the northeast part of the island.

Even the more “popular” beaches in La Graciosa, such as Playa del Salado and Francesa Beach, offer a serene experience.

When it comes to accommodations on this smallest of the Canary Islands, you have two options. There are some tourist apartments in Pedro Barba, but most of the options are located in Caleta del Sebo, making it the best choice for your stay.

How to Find Great Accommodation in Lanzarote: A Personal Take

After spending two weeks in Lanzarote I don't think I got enough of it
After spending two weeks in Lanzarote, I don’t think I got enough of it

Finding the right spot to stay in Lanzarote was a bit tricky since it was my first visit, and I tend to want to see it all. Luckily, I had almost two weeks to explore the island, so I split my stay in two different popular areas: Playa Blanca, located in the south, and Puerto del Carmen, in the southeast. I also had the chance to explore most of the island’s towns, both inland and coastal.

The Barceló Lanzarote Active Resort gets a 10 out of 10 from me
The Barceló Lanzarote Active Resort gets a 10 out of 10 from me

In Playa Blanca, I stayed at the Barceló Lanzarote Active Resort, which quickly became my favorite of the two. The resort had great amenities, a fantastic pool area, and direct access to the beach, making it a perfect spot to relax after exploring. In Puerto del Carmen, I stayed at Dreams Lanzarote Playa Dorada Resort & Spa. While it was also nice, I found it more crowded and not as cozy as the Barceló.

Now that I’ve done the resort touristy stint, I’m looking forward to exploring the more traditional side of the island next time: Villa de Teguise, here I come!

Where to Stay on Lanzarote Island: Useful Information

When planning a trip to Lanzarote, deciding where to stay is just one part of ensuring a smooth experience. The island has varied landscapes, from volcanic plains to stunning beaches. Its relatively small size makes it easy to explore, but understanding the different areas will help make the most of your visit and identify the best areas to stay in Lanzarote.

Playa Blanca in the south is a favorite for its relaxing beaches and serene atmosphere. It’s an ideal base for exploring nearby attractions like Papagayo Beach or Timanfaya National Park. On the other hand, Puerto del Carmen, in the southeast, has a livelier vibe with plenty of restaurants, bars, and easy beach access. Costa Teguise, located on the island’s eastern coast, provides a quieter option with great windsurfing spots and access to César Manrique’s artistic landmarks.

Across the island, you can find a variety of accommodations, including everything from budget apartments to luxurious resorts. Staying in a central locality makes exploring the northern and southern attractions easier, helping you choose from the best areas to stay in Lanzarote Island. For example, Costa Teguise offers a balance of accessibility and tranquility. Playa Blanca is perfect for a laid-back vibe, while Puerto del Carmen is better for nightlife and activity.

Getting around Lanzarote is simple. Renting a car is the easiest option, allowing access to remote spots like the Mirador del Río or Jameos del Agua. Public transportation is available, but it’s best for short trips between towns rather than extensive island exploration.

The island’s unique volcanic history creates amazing sights and experiences. It’s worth checking out the Timanfaya National Park to taste Lanzarote’s dramatic terrain or visit the Fundación César Manrique to learn about the artist’s influence on local architecture. Don’t forget to try the local wine, cultivated in volcanic soil, which gives it a distinct flavor.
