The main airport for Bucharest is Henri Coanda International Airport and this is located in the Otopeni area of Bucharest. It is around 18km North of Bucharest and the airport is often known as Otopeni because of its location.
To get to the city centre by bus the express bus 783 goes from the airport and into Bucharest and it runs every 20 minutes daily, even on weekends and bank holidays. Throughout the night it runs every 40 minutes. The bus will take around 40 minutes to get from the airport to the city centre but this can be longer during busy traffic.
To get from the airport to the city centre by train there is the Henri Coanda Express and this is a combined service that involves a minibus transfer to Bucaresti Nord Station. Tickets for this can be purchased inside the airport at a price of 8.1 lei. The train is located 2km away from the airport and once on the train the journey takes 30 minutes to Gara De Nord. The transfer is included in the ticket and the whole duration of the journey is around 50 minutes.
When it comes to getting around, Bucharest has an excellent public transport system but it can often seem confusing but it works extremely well.
The metro has four lines known as M1, M2, M3 and M4 and it does an excellent job of covering a lot of the city at a very good price. It is easy to navigate and makes it simple to get around the city.
There is a vast network of buses, trams and trolleybuses available which may seem confusing as the area they cover and the networks seems to intertwine and wind across the city. However, this is an excellent way of travelling around the city as a bus, tram or trolleybus can be found anywhere. All modes of public transport and frequent but they can get crowded during peak times. To find a station, look for a small, white plate with red writing that contains the name of the stations and the number of all buses and trollies that stop there. If there is an “N” before their number then this means that it is a night bus.
