Tucked away in a quaint 19th-century mansion right next to the historic heart of Sintra, the Sintra Marmòris Palace is a breathtaking luxury accommodation with stunning views of the mountains and the National Palace.
This little boutique hotel with just 9 rooms was a total highlight of my recent trip to Sintra.
Sintra’s Marmòris Palace
Boasting a grand total of 9 rooms, Sintra’s Marmòris Palace showcases a royal style decor and original antique furnishings that stay true to the historical period of its home, making every nook feel like a delightful time warp.
The hotel is set in a late 19th-century modernist mansion surrounded by 14,000 square meters of gardens that are home to peacocks—yes, real, live peacocks.
Although it has a period character, the Marmòris offers all kinds of modern amenities, including a heated swimming pool, and free à la carte breakfast.
As it could not be otherwise, the hotel has free Wi-Fi in the rooms and all common areas, as well as parking.

The location of the Sintra Marmòris Palace is one of the hotel’s main features. It is located in the north of the center of the small town, next to Jardim Correnteza, specifically in the Barão Almeida Santos. Therefore, by staying here, you will be close to the best areas to stay in Sintra.
This hotel is just minutes from some of the area’s main attractions, such as the Moorish Castle and the National Palace, and offers impressive views of both attractions from the gardens and terrace.
From here, you can easily explore all of Sintra’s points of interest on foot or opt for a guided city tour to reach places like the Pena Palace.
The hotel’s common areas
Staying at a hotel nestled in an old residence sure has its quirks—the layout of Marmòris is a tad unusual. Once you step inside, you’ll find the cozy reception area just to your right.
One thing that will surely catch your eye is the hotel’s fabulous period decor. It stays true to its roots, decked out with original late 19th-century furnishings and even family photographs of the folks who originally owned the place. Personal tip: take a moment to soak up the ambiance—it’s like a trip back in time!
The breakfast area is located at the rear of the main building and gives access to the terrace, gardens, and swimming pool.
The real star of the entire hotel is undoubtedly its ambiance and tranquility. That said, the peacocks loose in the gardens make the Marmòris a truly unique place.
In addition, the Sintra Marmòris Palace has a heated pool area with a retractable roof. The pool area also offers drinks and snacks.
Rooms at Sintra Marmòris Palace
As a former mansion converted into accommodation, the Sintra Marmòris Palace has several types of rooms. All are very different in terms of size and decoration, but they have similar services and equipment. These are the rooms at the Marmòris:
During our visit, we were lucky enough to stay in a superior room on the house’s second floor. This is a very spacious room which consists of two adjoining rooms and two bathrooms.
As expected, the antique decor is the main protagonist of the rooms.
Period furniture and decoration in fine woods, large chandeliers, and heavy curtains that look out onto beautiful green gardens complete the experience.
The master bathroom in the room was an art-deco fantasy, with Moorish inspiration in pink marble and frescoes on the ceiling. As you might expect, it included Rituals products.
The room’s equipment is completed with tea and coffee-making machines and utensils, piped music, television, and a small desk.
Breakfast
Breakfast at the Marmòris is a mix of traditional buffet and continental breakfast. They make you fill out a form each night to specify what you’ll want the next morning. The menu includes fresh produce, pastries (including pastel de nata, queixadas and travesseiros), and savory food, plus eggs and hot food.
Juices, coffee, tea, infusions, and sparkling wine are also available.
Although everything is spectacular, the best part of the breakfast is the view. You can enjoy café da manhã while appreciating the National Palace, the Castelo dos Mouros, and watching a group of peacocks flutter in front of you.
