Quinta da Regaleira is in the municipality of Sintra, in the Lisbon district of Portugal. It is near the historic center of Sintra, and António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro bought it in 1892 from its previous owner, the Viscountess of Regaleira.
Monteiro was a wealthy Brazilian entomologist, lawyer, and businessman fascinated by esotericism. In 1904, he commissioned the Italian architect Luigi Manini to design a series of enigmatic structures within the estate to reflect his interests in alchemy and Masonry. As a result, the estate ended up including a palace, chapel, and a luxurious park with lakes, caves, wells, fountains, and stunning gardens.
