2. Old Town

The Old Town or Historic Centre of Plovdiv is an architectural and historical site that spans through three of the Plovdiv hills: Nebet Tepe, Dzhambaz Tepe and Taksim Tepe.

This complex framework of narrow streets and slopes is the result of Plovdiv’s long history, which stretches from prehistory to the present day and combines the culture and architecture of antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Bulgarian Renaissance.

The most prominent monument in the Old Town is the Roman Theatre, one of the best-preserved ancient theatres in the world. This spectacular landmark was built during the period of the Roman emperor Trajan and can accommodate between 5,000 and 7,000 spectators. Currently, it is still in use.
